The latest shoe from Hi-Tec is unlike any other shoe I have ever owned. The best way I can describe it is half strop, half trainer, and a real cross between sandal and shoe. Hi-Tec are really starting to change up the design and look of their shoes and are taking the fight to the competition. As soon as these shoes arrived, I wanted to try them on and push them to some extremes.

The Look & Feel

In terms of aesthetics, they are a much better-looking shoe than the traditional trail sandal that has been around for ever, with a more trendier look. I can see myself packing these shoes on every overnight hiking trail I do in the future. They are light which is a big deal when packing for a multi-day trail, and they are as easy to put on as a flip flop with a draw string to tighten around your foot with ease and keep them nicely secure over uneven terrain. I was concerned that they would have a similar closing mechanism as a pair of strops but thankfully there is no Velcro to be found. They also have the grip of a trainer but flexibility of a trail shoe.

Where to use it?

In terms of use, I think this shoe will be useful for activities such as kloofing down the Riviersonderend river in Summer and easy rock hopping – their sole provides a confident grip on each step forward. I can also see myself after a long day of walking, sitting around a campfire relaxing with them on as comfortable slip on shoes. They have a bit of everything but are also totally unique in look, feel and comfort.

While they wouldn’t replace my comfortable hiking shoes on a long trail, there would be many opportunities to enjoy them on that trail at different spots.
