As the country struggles to come to terms with the Covid-19 pandemic, hiking is one of the few recommended ways to pass the time. Be sure not to mingle with anyone on your way to or from the mountains, though, and don’t forget to pack these essentials…

You wouldn’t go on a road trip with an old set of tyres, and you should never set out on a hike – no matter how short – without a decent set of boots. Thanks to the ingenious combination of an M-D Traction outsole and a V-Lite 365 Foam Midsole, the Hi-Tec Altitude Lite 3 Mid WP is both insanely rugged and durable and incredibly soft and cushy to wear. It’s also waterproof (great for wet weather hikes), breathable (great for those hot summer days) and offers peerless ankle support. Did we mention it’s also rather fetching? Remember that a boot can only ever be as good as the socks you pair it with…So kick blisters to the kerb with a pair of 80% cotton Hi-Tec Exploration Socks which boast reinforced toe and heel sections and a snug-fitting rib top to keep dirt and twigs out.

Another absolute must for any hike is a daypack containing food, water (at least 2 litres), sun cream, foul-weather gear (the higher you go, the more volatile the conditions), headlamp and first aid kit. Of course, not all daypacks are created equal... Boasting a super-lightweight construction complemented by a moulded back and ventilated shoulder straps, you’d be amazed at how much you can fit into the Hi-Tec Contour 28L. In addition to a very roomy main compartment (with a great elasticated pouch that fits my first aid kit perfectly), there are two external water bottle holders, a sunglass tether (you will thank them for this!), a headphone port and an outer pouch that’s great for sunscreen and car keys.

Never underestimate the importance of a hat when hiking– even on cloudy days. Sunburn (or, worse still, sunstroke) can be the difference between a pleasant day out and a trip to the ER. The uber-stylish Hi-Tec Urban Trucker Cap is so much more than a pretty face. The generous peak affords plenty of sun protection, the cotton sweat band and front panel reduce perspiration and the mesh crown makes letting off steam easier.

In a world where navigation apps and GPS watches are the norm it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking it’s impossible to get lost anymore. But what happens if your device runs out juice? Or if you lose cellphone signal? In addition to your various digital devices (and a means to charge them), always carry a paper map of the region you’re hiking in and an old-fashioned compass (dig out your high school geography notes if you’ve forgotten how to use one!). These two pieces of equipment could be the difference between life and death.
Now that you’re properly kitted out, all that remains is to persuade the rest of your family to leave home (never hike alone) and head for the hills…
